Mariëlla Tirotto
& The Blues Federation
Wil Wijnhoven (www.bluesbreeker.nl)
For years
they performed on the various blues stages under the name of
Nederblues.nl. Their set list consisted mostly of numbers from the
well-known Nederblues bands like: Livin' Blues and Cuby
& The
Blizzards. After having changed their name into Mariëlla
Tirotto
& The Blues Federation they have somewhat set a different
course
and have added more work of their own to their set list. The CD
'Somewhere Down The Road' has become the result of all of this. Their
debut CD on which there are as many as twelve regular songs plus a
bonus-track.
The collection of songs on the CD are from one extreme to another, but,
with that, confirms singer and leading lady Mariëlla Tirotto's
jazz background. Many times you hear that jazz sound in the songs.
Obviously the main part is blues, but we hear more. There are numbers
on it which carry the sound of the seventies. Especially in
the
song 'Bad Soul' you can hear it, it is nearly psychedelic.
Some
of the songs in which the brass section plays a leading part tend to
have a big band sound. I specifically say tend to, for the blues is
still the red thread through all the songs.
There is also a variety in the setting of the numbers. Up-tempo numbers
alternated by 'listening' songs, compare: 'Playing The Game', the
rather strong opening number, with 'Sometimes', a typical song at
which, sitting back in your lazy chair with your eyes closed, you can
fully relax and drift away. Because of these extremes you are presented
with an amazing CD with practically all the songs written by
themselves. And the latter you can call admirable; it shows
courage to record mainly work of your own and publish it,
being
your debut CD. And still, they do not forget their roots, for also here
you come across a Nederblues number. 'Window of my Eyes' of Cuby
&
The Blizzards. On 'Somewhere Down The Road' we get to hear a very
special and extremely beautiful version.
'Somewhere Down The Road' is a fine debut CD representing a broad
spectre of music styles, but in which the blues still dominates.
