CD Review: Somewhere Down
The Road from Mariëlla Tirotto & the Blues Federation
Contrasts
are drawn to one another – a colourful mixture of
contrasts offers many fascinating aspects. She is half Italian, lives
in the Netherlands and she and her four boys take the clubs and Blues
Festivals in the country by storm. Her striking voice, the
band's
perfect timing – blues-rock in one piece, and more, for all
five
of them master their trades in other styles as well.
Their debut album 'Somewhere Down The Road' makes you prick up your
ears. Mariëlla Tirotto has got a marvellous sound.
Considering her height (1.59 m) and exotic appearance, extremely deep
and rough at the same time. You must look twice before you see it is
one and the same person.
Originally Mariëlla is a Jazz singer. She became known with
her
Jazz album 'Stranger' and travelled through the country with her own
Jazz quartet. Mariëlla Tirotto is flexible, however. She
spreads
her strong qualities over a wide range of musical styles such as Pop,
Rock, Blues, Funk, Soul and Jazz. In 'Somewhere Down The Road' she
shows her blues-rock side. Full of emotions, charm and melancholy.
'Somewhere Down The Road' is fascinating because of its variety of
styles. Blues and Funk, brass-sections and blues harp, relaxed
bar-jazz, a bit of Latin and Rhythm & Blues. Colourful,
with
powerful charisma and slow passages. A mixture for a wide public. The
debut album has got 13 songs. It is remarkable that Mariëlla
Tirotto does not sing about love and relational problems much, but
about important things in daily life, such as the needs of countries in
this world, the cruelty to animals, the comfort and indifference and a
lot of other matters.
Her band – all experienced virtuosos and skilful musicians,
who
master their trades. Harald Koll – guitar, Michel de Kok
–
blues harp, Heins Greten - bass and keyboard and John Kakiay
–
drums.
Mariëlla Tirotto & the Blues Federation –
dynamic melancholy.
